Voice of Mumbai Kirit set for 15th Lok Sabha

Dr Kirit Somaiya, who has been championing the cause of the common man, will have a smooth sailing in the Lok Sabha poll from Mumbai North East.
From the lower middle class families to the small investor have all have only praise for Dr Somaiya, fondly called “Aapla Manoos”.
Meet any one a cross the constituency – and every one has only thing to say: “Kiritbhai should win and he will”. The popularity for Dr Somaiya can also gauged from the discussions in crowded local trains, bus stops and in shopping malls. “Kiritbhai ka toh jawaab naheen,” said Ramnik Lal Mehta, a senior citizen. “Yes, he will win,” said a young college student Tripti Kulkarni returning from her tutorials.
Dr Somaiya’s election meetings have all been a massive success. His own mass contact rallies, meetings at street corners and railway stations have all aroused such a huge response that the rivals seem to have begun to worry if they will be able to save their deposits, leave alone coming close to Dr Somaiya’s numbers.
With BJP ally Shiv Sena leadership and cadre mobilizing support for Dr Somaiya, his victory is a foregone conclusion, political analysts say.
“This is one clear cut case where massive crowds at election rallies will definitely convert into votes for Dr Somaiya,” said a veteran political journalist of a leading media group. “You do not need election experts to say this; it is all there in front of us. I know the pulse of the people here,” he said.
It is based on issues that concern the voter and they selfless manner in which Dr Somaiya has been relentlessly fighting that has caught the imagination of a cross section. Among the issues that Dr Somaiya has been focusing on are: the sugar scam that has resulted in its price rise, the continuous load shedding that has inconvenienced the people and the Mithi river project.
Although the project has been delayed due to non-receipt of sufficient funds from the Centre and the ongoing infighting among the various government agencies, Dr Somaiya asserts that “My aim is to get the Mithi River project completed by 2012”. The massive flooding in the Mithi River during the worst deluge in the history of Mumbai on 26 July 2005 had claimed 450 lives out of the total deaths of 550 across the metropolis.
A Man of Action, Kirit has been active in various segment of socio-political life, on the issues and problem of Mumbai, fighting for Small Investors, active in health awareness. He is the founder President of Investors’ Grievances Forum, an organization having ISO 9001-2000, which gave birth to Small Investors’ Protection movement.
His Yuvak Pratishthan, a 25 years old NGO, has been doing commendable work in Slum welfare, Health, TB and AIDS control programmes. The Yuvak Pratishthan also got ISO 9001-2000 in the year 2005.
Many in the constituency recall that as a Parliamentarian, Dr Somaiya who had represented the area in the13th Lok Sabha during 1999 – 2004 echoed Mumbai’s voice in Delhi. In fact, he holds a record for submitting the maximum number of petitions to Parliament i.e. 11 (out of 27 total petitions presented in 13th Lok Sabha) during his tenure in Lok Sabha.. He has also submitted more than 500 questions in Parliament during his tenure in the 13th Lok Sabha.

Kirit Somaiya – a politician and a gentleman
Known as a Politician with a Difference, Kirit Somaiya, a true Mumbaikar to the core was born and brought up in Mumbai. Working tirelessly for the interest of Mumbai, has is fondly called “Aapla Manus”.
A Chartered account by profession, Kirit Somaiya is known as “Man of Finance”. He passed C.A. Examination in 1979, figuring in the first 50 in the All India Merit List. He has been conferred the Doctorate by Mumbai University in March 2005 for hi research “Finance – Capital Market – Small Investors Protection”. He submitted one of the longest thesis of 1202 pages, submitted in Two Volumes.

Kirit is known as person who pioneered the Small Investors Protection movement in Mumbai, India.
The Investor Grievances Forum (IGF) set up by Kirit Somaiya in 1993-94 has successfully campaigned against various fraudulent activities in the capital market. It has been continuously agitating and making representations to regulatory authorities and the government, to improve the financial systems to benefit small investors. Post-election, he would further take up the issue of protection to small investors more vigorously so that the Capital Market remains healthy and wealthy.
Taking up cudgels on behalf of the common man, Kirit is keen to focus on the issue of affordable housing with a loan at 5-10 %, sustainability of economy and infrastructure development. He has nurtured the constituency very well during the past five years, having established contact with practically every voter through various means like his website, letters and even personal contacts.
Having completed the first phase of cleaning up of the Mithi river, he plans to ensure that the project would be completed by 2012 with adequate fund allocation from both Centre and the State.
Kirit had delivered Speeches at renowned Institutes of Management like Indira Institute of Management, Pune and ICFAI, Mumbai and made a Presentation at the University of Pune’s Department of Management Sciences.
Kirit was motivated and encouraged by his mother during his childhood to serve the country through politics. He decided to enter into politics and concentrate on finance and economic issues when he was in Std. 7. As student Activist, he was jailed during Jaiprakash Narayan’s Movement and Emergency in 1975.
He hails from a middle class family. He is married to Prof. Dr. Medha, and their son Neil, is an SSC student.
Dr. Medha Somaiya is also socio-political activist. A Professor of Chemistry in Ruia College, She has been conferred Doctorate – PhD in “Slum Rehabilitation” by Mumbai University in the year 2004.
The “Somaiya” couple is a unique couple of Mumbai, well educated, dedicated, both have acquired Doctorates in their forties on socio-economic subjects touching the life of Common Man.

India Votes: By boats, choppers, but we must vote!

Andaman Nicobar Island
v The Andaman Nicober group of Islands is one constituency and is 700 Km. long. Many places require 35-40 hrs journey by ships. Poll personnel to some places has been dispatched by helicopter.
Arunachal Pradesh
v 4 Polling stations i.e 13-Lumta and 12-Pakke under Kessang (ST) Assembly Segment, 40-Mramboo under 41-Anini (ST) Assembly Segment and 35 - Upper Modoi Deep under 49-Bordumsa-Diyum Assembly Segment each have 3 voters respectively
v Many polling parties in Tawang, Kurung Kumey, Upper Subanisiri, upper Siang, Mechuka, Dibang Valley, Anjaw, etc have reached their poling station by foot for 3-4 days from nearest helipad/road head.
v 690 polling parties have been transported by helicopter to remote villages bordering Myanmar and China border.
v Highest polling stations are located at Thinghbu (alt. 12,148 feet) and Mago (alt.12,248 feet) and Luguthand (alt.13,157 feet) which are also snow bound and located on the Indo-China border.
Assam
v Porters have been engaged for carrying the polling materials for 5 polling stations as it involves a 40 km trek through an area infested with wild elephants in Bokaijan District.
